Overview:

Epidemiology, the cornerstone of public health research, helps inform medicine and policy decisions by identifying disease patterns and determining risk factors for diseases among populations. The field relies on the application of scientific principles to population health problems, which includes a systematic approach to investigation and careful data collection. While epidemiology is a field unto itself, its applications in the global health arena are great.

In this session, we will explore the field of epidemiology as it pertains to global health. This intersection will be examined from the perspective of individual clinicians, researchers, public health officials, and policymakers.

Key Objectives:

  • Apply the principles of epidemiological research to global health issues
  • Justify individual clinical responsibility as it relates to epidemiological investigation.
  • Appraise the potential of epidemiological research to influence global health interventions and policy.
  • Criticize the application of epidemiological research to global health problems in the context of ethics.
