Lecture Overview:

In this lecture, we will focus on the basics of human rights and the various ways in which human rights violations impact health around the globe. Students should gain a basic understanding of the concept of human rights and what their ethical obligations are in upholding, promoting and protecting human rights. Additionally, students should gain a basic understanding of ethical issues in global health along with standard codes of conduct that guide humanitarian organizations.

Key Objectives:

·         Understand the concept of “human rights” and describe the philosophical foundations upon which they rest.

·         Recognize the health consequences of ethical and human rights violations, both at an individual and community level.

·         Acquire an appreciation for the role that promoting and protecting human rights can play in achieving health.

·         Develop an awareness of the role that health professionals can play in extending human rights practice and recognize the ethical obligations of health professionals in the face of human rights violations.

·         Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical obligations of health professionals when involved in humanitarian aid work.
