Overview:

Socio-economic factors play a large role in one’s general state of health and health outcomes. The poorer one is, the sicker one becomes, and the sooner ones life ends. Even incremental differences in wealth and status among populations that are of a higher class can lead to differences in health. But what about other hidden factors such as stress, work, unemployment, transportation? How do these determinants affect health?

To view health through the lens of social determinants emphasizes the role of multiple factors operating on every level of society, from neighborhoods to global communities. Being aware of these factors, immediate responses can be implemented to alleviate morbidity, mortality, and disparities in health and therefore create a greater quality of life. This lecture will provide a foundational overview of the social determinants of health and the impact they have on individuals and populations.

Key Objectives:

  • Define and describe the association between physical geography, socioeconomic status, and gender with inequalities and access to healthcare.
  • Evaluate the ability of public health/medicine to address these determinants, and examine integrative approaches to address determinants.
  •  Illustrate the particular public health challenges faced by vulnerable populations.
