Introduction to Global Health: A Case-Based Approach
introduces first-year students to 13 key topics in global health through weekly seminars, which are 1.5 hours in length. Speakers include global health leaders from academia, policy institutions, and the private sector. The final thirty minutes of each lecture is devoted to a case-based discussion led by the students.

Course Objectives 

1. Gain an understanding of global health issues;
2. Appreciate that global health involves multiple academic disciplines and belief systems;
3. Understand the important relationships of demography, epidemiology, development, and global health;
4. Develop methods for analyzing topics in global health and be able to devise potential solutions to these problems (with the help of case studies, etc.)

Expectations of Students:

  • Attendance: 80% attendance (11 of the 14 sessions)
  • Reading of the assigned papers and case study associated with each session (about 2 readings per week)
  • Participation in class discussions and case study discussions
  • Participation in mandatory anonymous feedback quizzes (weekly) (candid responses and opinions are appreciated!)

For those students who are officially enrolled, attendance at all sessions is expected. The Global Health Fellow must be notified of any absence (e.g. illness, conflicting appointments, etc.)
