2. Identify underlying socioeconomic, environmental and political factors contributing to childhood mortality
3. Describe interventions known to improve child survival and the barriers to their implementation
4. Discuss progress in child health and survival goals using the Millennium Development Goals as a standard

1. Measure growth and nutritional status using commonly used tools for field assessment.
2. Define common terms used to describe nutritional status
3. Discuss direct and indirect causes of malnutrition in children
4. Explain the outcomes of poor nutrition on health, growth, development, intellectual and economic potential
5. Describe community level interventions for malnutrition
6. Identify the essential and common micronutrient deficiencies in low income settings

11:00 - 12:00pm Emerging Viral Infections of the Nervous System

This lecture will review the ever changing nature of viral infections of the central nervous system, focusing on previously unknown pathogenic viruses, old viruses infecting new hosts and geographic spread of previously isolated viruses.

1. Discuss the contribution of diarrhea to global childhood mortality
2. Identify social and environmental factors underlying diarrheal disease
3. Discuss pathology, diagnosis and management of diarrhea
4. Discuss contribution of community-based care to reduction of mortality from diarrhea in developing countries

1. Describe the impact of the introduction of routine childhood immunizations on global infant and child mortality rates, and identify areas of continuing concern
2. Discuss strategies for, and barriers to, achieving adequate immunization coverage in low income and displaced population settings
3. Plan and implement an immunization campaign in a refugee camp
