This lecture will discuss the most common waterborne pathogens and effective ways to obtain safe water in the field. We will review the most advanced technologies in water purification and how this can be incorporated into international travel.


9:00-10:00am Mental health and logistics issues
Madelon Finkel, PhD

The focus of this introductory lecture is to review pertinent logistical issues for students going abroad as well as to discuss in-depth stress points that can, and usually do, occur while abroad. Two cases studies will be presented to help make the student aware of the possibility of experiencing mental health stresses and how to best cope with these stresses.

The lecture will focus on (1) Major themes of poisoning world-wide; (2) Common causes of poisoning world-wide; (3) Common causes of poisoning deaths world-wide; (4) Major toxicology problems world-wide: Bhopal, India 1984 (methyl isocynate) & Bangladesh (arsenic)
