Surgical diseases, and trauma in particular, are leading causes o worldwide morbidity and mortality, especially in the developing world. As low- and middle-income countries increase their capacity to respond to emergent medical and surgical conditions, knowledge of the management of these conditions, and the unique and differing approaches needed in the developing world, will become increasingly relevant to health care professionals and students engaging in international work.

Lecture Objectives:
-Overview of trauma epidemiology in the developing world
-Basic principles of trauma management and protocols
-Injury prevention
-WHO trauma guidelines
-Special considerations for the management of trauma and emergent medical conditions in the field
-Perspectives on field experience


10:00 - 11:00am Dental/Oral Care in Resource-Poor Settings
Mark Wolff, PhD, DDS

This session will focus on the identification and management of New York College of Dentistry conditions frequently found health resource poor environments that may be disclosed on routine patient examination or during emergent patient presentation. Attention will be paid to differential diagnosis and management skills. Conditions ranging from the simple toothache, minor dental infection, deep space infections, trauma and oral malignancy will be presented in context of global healthcare intervention.



11:00 - 12:00pm Ophthalmology in Resource-Poor Settings

The objectives of this lecture will be to (1) Demonstrate basic eye examination techniques that can be utilized in resource-poor environments. (2) To discuss common eye disease presentations in developing countries. (3) To provide an overview of ophthalmology programs involved in global health that are available to medical students, residents, fellows, and physicians.
