GLH.100B.NY:: Global Health: Clinical Skills for Resource-poor Environments (Two Weeks)
This elective teaches high-yield skills in preparation for common clinical encounters in resource-poor settings. Geared towards students who plan to serve abroad or who have interest in this area. Hands-on teaching workshops and lab, which span a wide range of disciplines ranging from Infectious Diseases to Mother-child Health to Emergency Medicine and more, will be given by  global health faculty and global health practitioners from multiple institutions including: Weill Cornell Medical College, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Mt. Sinai Medical College, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York University School of Medicine, the World Health Organization, and more.

At the end of this course, students will walk away with:
  • An enhanced understanding of the clinical responsibilities and knowledge necessary when working in resource-poor settings, includes appreciating the value of the physical patient exam, being prepared with appropriate skills and mindset in order to effectively help others, and much more. 
  • Familiarity and practice with hands-on skills like: suturing, splinting, improvisational skills, making and reading malarial smears, analyzing stool and urine samples, treating malnutrition, administering Oral Rehydration Therapy, water purification techniques, and more. 
  • A network of faculty and peers passionate about and involved in global health, who are interested in future collaboration and mentorship.
  • A worthwhile prerequisite for students interested in Global Health Residency Programs.

Overview/Expectations
This elective is Pass/Fail. Attendance to all lectures is mandatory. Absences due to sicknesses and for interviews are excused, though interview absences must be announced in advance to the Course Director and Fellow.
